New Media Literacy & Learning Initiative

I recently got involved with the New Media Consortium

(NMC), an "international consortium of nearly 200 leading colleges, universities, museums, corporations, and other learning-focused organizations dedicated to the exploration and use of new media and new technologies."

Last year the NMC hosted on online conference and summit focused on visual literacy as part of their New Media Literacy & Learning Initiative:

The NMC’s New Media Literacy & Learning Initiative is a multi-year effort to explore and expand the potential of new developments in visual and digital literacy, and the umbrella for a range of research, publications, conferences, and related activities.

The Initiative is informed by work in media literacy, semiotics, iconography, visual cognition, and the arts, but centers on the set of abilities and skills where aural, visual and digital literacy overlap. These include the ability to understand the power of images and sounds, to recognize and use that power, to manipulate and transform digital media, to distribute them pervasively, and to easily adapt them to new forms.

For more information about the NMC online conference on visual literacy visit http://www.nmc.org/events/2005visual_literacy_conf/. Most of the files are offline now but there is plenty to read about 21st century literacy.

Also, my proposal has been selected for this year's NMC online conference on personal broadcasting. The title of my presentation is Digital Creativity. This is also the name of my summer course through MassArt Continuing Ed.
